A couple of years ago there were spate of ‘cash for crash’ accidents near me and the stories that appeared in my local rag spooked me enough to look into the fast growing market for in car cams.
I originally bought a decent HD version which did a job but it quickly became apparent that the drawback to the unit was that it was a stick on the windscreen style unit and you needed to pack it away when parked otherwise it was likely to get ‘half inched’!
Very tedious and so it made its way to my ‘not really practical’ man drawer of ‘promise over practicality’ gadgets. A friend then told me about a range of in car rear view mirror HD cams which fitted over the rear view mirror and remain in place permanently, either plugged into a 12V in car socket or permanently wired in.
After some web research I bought one from eBay and I must say it’s been a revelation. It captures crystal clear video in hi res at 120 degrees field of view. Fitting one gives you a curious comfort I can’t explain.
When driving it’s like having your own personal guardian angel. It fits neatly over your existing rear view mirror and the 12v power cable is hidden around the windscreen edge.
Luckily I’ve not been in an accident since having it, but I have compiled a library of ‘crazy driver’ snippets which keep me amused!
I paid around £65 for mine but you can pick similar ones up for about £45 these days.
